Woodsure is a not-for-profit organisation wholly owned and subsidised by HETAS.
DEFRA appointed HETAS & Woodsure to run the 'ready to burn' fuel certification scheme.
To be awarded a Woodsure certification a suppliers firewood has to be under 20% moisture content.
This includes annual inspections with pin metre readings at time of inspection alongside firewood samples that are taken away and oven tested in a lab environment to check the Wet basis moisture content.
(Baxter logs results for 2021/22/23/24 below)
Firewood naturally air-seasoned like we do at Baxter logs or forced dried in kilns to under 20% moisture content produces less smoke when burnt compared to firewood with a moisture content over 20%.
Woodsure Ready to burn is the UK's only wood fuel quality assurance scheme.
All Firewood Logs sold in quantities under 2m3 have to be certified ready to burn under the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020.
A List of approved suppliers can be found on the Ready to burn website.
Is Baxter logs Woodsure Ready to Burn Certified ?
Yes Baxter Logs is Woodsure ready to burn accredited.
We joined the 'ready to burn' scheme at the beginning of 2021.
We are very proud to be apart the scheme improving the standard of firewood in the UK and educating the customer on best practices for the domestic burning of firewood.
Our Ready To burn lab test certificates from 9th April 2021 can be seen above. Our average moisture content for our hardwood logs was 11.26%. Whilst this was an impressive result for us given as mentioned we air season our firewood we decided it to be 'too dry'. As we use our own stock in our stove at home we noticed that the wood didn't last as long as usual. Although it was exceptionally easy to light and provided good heat for us it burnt too quickly compared to wood around 14-17% moisture content .
In 2022 our average moisture content for our hardwood logs was 16.4%. After making adjustments to our storage and seasoning processes aiming for 14-17% moisture content we were very pleased with this result. The samples were taken on 25th November 2022 proving the quality of our seasoned hardwood logs year round. Whether you buy in April, August or November you will receive logs under 20% moisture content.
In August 2023 our seasoned hardwood logs Lab results averaged 14.4% moisture content. We were once again pleased that we have managed to season our stock within our goal between 14-17% moisture content.
Who needs force dried/ kiln dried logs when Air-seasoned logs are this good & significantly better for the environment !
In August 2023 our kindling was also sent off to be lab tested. The moisture content averaged 12% so our kindling also became Officially 'Ready To Burn'. The Kindling is made from softwood and given its small stick like size significantly easier and faster to season than the hardwood logs. The kindling being 12% is ideal as it is ultimately used to light a fire. Kindling is easier and faster to set alight than a full log so its moisture content being lower is desirable.
We have received our oven lab tests from the ready to burn scheme taken on 27th August 2024.
Our Hardwood Logs came back with an average moisture content of 14.36% and our softwood kindling was 12.5%. These results are almost identical to 2023's lab oven moisture audit, again within the 14-17% goal we aim for with the hardwood logs.
You may have also spied there is a lab oven report for Seasoned Softwood logs. This is a new product we are introducing as a more affordable alternative to Hardwood logs. The Softwood was sent off to test whether it was ready for sale. We were very pleased when the results came back with a average moisture content of 15.79% again within our 14-17% aim.
If you are looking for firewood in your area please do use a firewood provider that is 'Ready To Burn' accredited and not from someone you found on Facebook. They may well be cheaper in the short term but there are no assurances on the quality of their firewood.
Remember to get stocked up on Kindling/Firelighters etc. with your firewood delivery as we are a delivery only service so do not offer any collections.
